Almost a year ago Tim started working out at a CrossFit "Box". CrossFit is a workout that combines strength training, weight lifting, plyometrics, sprinting, power lifting, and a bunch of other hard stuff in varied interval-style workouts.
Basically it's the kind of workout that makes you cry, vomit, and then leaves you with a hacking cough for a couple of days after until your lungs recover.
Tim's words: "Sometimes I taste blood when I'm doing CrossFit."
You may not know this, but I married a very athletic and competitive man. This is ironic because I am neither very athletic nor very competitive. When you're as slow as I am, it's really kind of pointless to be competitive.
Over the years I have benefited from being around Tim's sometimes obnoxious athleticism. (Example: We buy cross country skis. Neither of us have ever cross country skied before. Tim is immediately awesome. We do a couple of Triathlons (this hasn't happened in a while). Tim does great. Extrapolate to any physical endeavor, and chances are Tim can at least keep up with the middle of the pack at the very least.) I have improved at running and biking and have gotten to the point where I actually enjoy working out more, which wasn't always the case. Having said this, I'm still dang slow and I can't do more than one full push-up.
So...on Saturday Tim and I headed out to "BoxtOberfest", a CrossFit competition that Neighborhood Smiles sponsored. A couple of things that made me think, "Um yeah...this isn't for me":
1. I think wearing makeup while working out is an abomination. Sweating? With makeup on? And hairspray in the hair? Sick. Not all the female competitors were made up but the two just don't go together in my book.
2. Someone decided that knee high socks and butt-short shorts should be cool in CrossFit. Obviously no one asked me.
3. Tats. Lots of 'em.
There were some pretty funny shirts and signs, like, "Intentions are not enough" (sorry!). Or "If you like my Rack you should see my Snatch" (sorry? I believe these are two different types of lifts?). My favorite sign was "Just Keep Going (that's what she said)".
Anyway, I watched some of the girls compete, and I have to say that I was duly impressed. There was something amazing about watching girls with serious muscle definition and lifting prowess. I mean, these girls were powerful, out there doing things physically that I would have thought before were "too hard" for girls. Silly, I know, and against my "Girls can do anything" lip service, but I guess I just hadn't seen anything like that before.
It made me start considering adding in CrossFit once a week...once Josie starts sleeping through the night so that I don't go dropping kettleballs on myself.

It was Tim in the short shorts and knee highs wasn't it?
bahhhhhhhhhhahbbbaaaaaba. freaking funny post. you gave me a halloween idea from those cross fit competitor descriptions. butt shorts. knee high socks. heaps of hair spray. make up. one of those great shirts.,... probably the rack one. and some tats. of course..... oh but without the muscles. dang.. forgot about that part. Muffin could pull it off! but only you and tim would get the reference. wish i could have seen this. great post. I would like to add cross fit. I did one class with my sister in law who is a regular when lyon was about 5 months. i puked.
Aaron really likes CrossFit but can't bring himself to join the gym, so he does the workouts at home. I've done some with him and it's crazy hard. I really do enjoy lifting, though. I was at my best shape of my life when I was lifting consistently about 2 years ago.
I remember seeing a grown woman do 5 chin-ups... on the monkey bars at a playground. She was nuts! I couldn't stop STARING! I didn't know grown women could do stuff like that. Now that I think about it, I'll bet she did Crossfit. I mean, chinups at a playground??
oddly enough i started doing crossfit a little over a month ago. I think I've decided that it's like a super power - it can be used for good or for evil. If done right i think its effective and an awesome work out with cool, level headed people. If done wrong its a one way ticket to a massive back injury in a room full of douchebags. The pasadena one has pretty good folks in it, and isn't super intense, thankfully.
You are hilarious! Love your blog... and your girls are soo darling. The post where they are wearing the twinner light blue and pink H&M dresses? Londyn has that dress. So fun. And by the way... your dad is such a cute dad! I love dads. Hope you guys are well. Thanks for your amazing and supportive comment on our blog :) xo
